Parties to a mediation have to pay for the mediator, accommodation (unless as often happens this is provided by one of the parties or their lawyers) and their lawyers.

Usually a mediator’s fees are shared equally between the parties. They are payable in full in advance and are not refundable if the mediation is cancelled by one or more of the parties within seven days of the mediation date.

My fees do include:
– up to five hours preparation, including telephone calls with the parties, prior to the mediation day;
– seven hours (10.00am to 5.00pm) mediation on the mediation day;
– all travelling time and travel expenses within the UK;

My fees do not include:
– hire of the premises used for the mediation and refreshments during the day, this being for the parties to arrange and pay;
– overnight hotel accommodation, if reasonably required;
– VAT, but please note that VAT is not currently payable on my fees;
– travel expenses outside the UK.

My fees vary according to the amount in dispute and the number of parties. They are not set in stone and I am always happy to discuss fees over the telephone and work towards a budget. What follows is a guide.

Claims of up to £80,000: £500 per party (i.e. in a two party case, £1,000 in total). In addition, preparation time in excess of five hours and time spent in excess of seven hours on the mediation day will be charged at £75 per party, per hour or part thereof

Claims between £80,000 and £250,000: £1,000 per party (i.e. in a two party case £2,000 in total). In addition, preparation time in excess of five hours and time spent in excess of seven hours on the mediation day will be charged at £100 per party, per hour or part thereof.

Claims between £250,000 and £500,000: £1,500 per party (i.e. in a two party case £3,000 in total). In addition, preparation time in excess of five hours and time spent in excess of seven hours on the mediation day will be charged at £125 per party, per hour or part thereof.

Claims between £500,000 and £1m: £2,000 per party (i.e. in a two party case £4,000 in total). In addition, preparation time in excess of five hours and time spent in excess of seven hours on the mediation day will be charged at £150 per party, per hour or part thereof.

For disputes involving claims in excess of £1,000,000, or for mediations outside the UK, please call me to discuss.

Please note that I am also a member of various mediation panels such as TBG (formerly Clerksroom), Unity Legal Solutions and the Society of Mediators. If I am appointed by one of those panels, unless otherwise stated the relevant panel’s mediation fees and other terms of business will apply to that appointment.
